Journal (2/16/04)

Sunday - February 22, 2004 - HAPPY BIRTHDAY GEORGE WASHINGTON, EVA LEIGH & AUNT MARION.  I'm sure there are some other birthdays I'm missing.  I typed the first sentence a long time ago.  Then I realized that the cable was out, so I was going nowhere fast!  It took a while, but I'm back in business.  Isn't technology great?!?!

Andrew drinking a non-alcoholic pina colada at Red Lobster in DeKalb.                         Jarrett holding up Larry Lobster at Red Lobster.

I'm going to see what's going on upstairs.  I hear a rattling.  Could be a large critter or it could just be Bob.  See ya later, bye, djb

Saturday - February 21, 2004 - It snowed a little bit last night, so the grass that was showing through yesterday when it got really warm is now covered once again with snow.  That's the weather report from here!  I was dreaming about CATS last night.  I was trying to pick out Hobbes from three cats that looked like him.  Actually, Hobbes looks exactly like Mo-Jo.  That was Bob's first cat.  Poor Mo-Jo was really old when the boys were born (well, so were we!).

MoJo trying to escape Andrew's clutches.  Nice kitty.                   Jarrett & Andrew in red sweatshirts for the Christmas picture with Snowball.

I was looking for a picture of Hobbes, then I realized that both Snowball and Hobbes were already in here somewhere, so then I found this photo of Andrew and Jarrett posing for the Christmas card picture one year.  I chose the one where they were holding Snowball which I think was the best choice.  Andrew has that almost ready to burst out laughing look on his face.  Every single year, I would take 24 pictures to get ONE perfect shot.  Is that obsessive compulsive behavior or some other disorder?  You don't have to answer that!!  Must go now.  see ya later.  bye, djb

Jarrett & Andrew putting fake vomit on Grandpa Berg's arm - he maintains a poker face.  A few years later, while the boys are playing poker with Grandpa, Andrew cannot maintain his poker face.  Jarrett, on the other hand, is not happy with the outcome.  Uncle Bergy is grilling steaks.

...later this morning (2/20) - I was going through some photos and I came across Andrew's report card from Kindergarten.  We were quite surprised when we got the report card and saw that Andrew didn't know how to skip.  Who knew?  We practiced and practiced skipping in the driveway.  You can just imagine that scenario.  I didn't take pictures of that!!   Many years later, at Uncle Ted and Aunt Vada's 50th wedding anniversary in Minnesota, we finally got photographic proof that Andrew can skip.  What a hoot!

                                                     Andrew in kindergarten.

The word "skips" is circled and NO is written above it.

Here is Andrew, many years later, finally mastering the fine art of skipping!

Friday - February 20, 2004 - When Bob got home from the game last night, I knew it didn't go well when he came into the house and he wasn't screaming, "We won! We won!"  He said, "We lost by 3 points."  The Kaneland Girls Varsity Basketball team lost by 3 measly points.  Let me put it this way, I'm not exactly a gracious loser.  It really sucks!  THEN, adding insult to injury, when I went out this morning to get the newspapers (IN THE RAIN!!), what do I see on the front page of the Daily Herald?  Oh yeah, West Aurora whooping and hollering.  You'd think it was Friday the 13th.  I'm very sad that we didn't win.  I remember when I was a coach how it felt to not win.  Since I grew up in the days before girls could actually play sports, I've never been on a real team as a player.  When I was in grade school, my brothers got to be on the baseball team but I couldn't be on it.  Since we played baseball every day of our lives in the summer, I was WAY better than half the boys on the team.  I never understood why I couldn't play.  It was absurd to me.  But, I digress.  Those were the olden days, for sure.  I'm going to do my best to get some organizing done today.  Wish me luck.  see ya later, djb

Andrew hugging Jarrett in front of the gigantic staghorn fern - requested by Aunt Diane.

Thursday - February 19, 2004 - It still looks like winter outside, but it is going to be VERY warm here today....like in the 40's.  That is warm, my friends.  Of course, Florida is a lot warmer.  NOT!  It's been quite a cool winter down there.  Although one of the years we went down to Florida, it was hot.  Andrew and Jarrett would go out on the patio and do their homework.  I think that lasted for two days. This might have been in 1996.

Andrew doing homework & Jarrett smiling early in the morning - check out their WILD hair.  Plus, I also like that white tiger.

It's time to do some organizing.  I do talk about that a lot, don't I?  Even if I don't accomplish what I set out to do, I might even make a list today.  so there.  see ya later.  bye, djb

Wednesday - February 18, 2004 - It's so exciting that the Kaneland Girls Varsity Basketball Team won last night.  They're now slated to play West Aurora this Thursday.  GOOD LUCK LADY KNIGHTS!!!!  Let's see, I have a picture somewhere that I took in 1995 in the fall when we went out to Nelson Lake on a Saturday.  Here it is:

I recognize Mitchell, Jarrett and Jessica.  I also have a picture of a critter somewhere - I'll have to find that.

We're getting ready for the February thaw.  It must have something to do with March madness.  I'm sure!  I was going to get organized today but Hobbes and I took a vote and he decided to sleep, and I'm going shopping.  Enough chit chat.  I had a lot of fun scanning the birthday pictures.  I have more of course, so I'll get right on that after I get back.  see ya.  bye, djb

...even later (2/17/04) - Here are some pictures of the boys when they played basketball.

Andrew putting on his basketball shoes getting ready to go play a game.                        Jarrett saying "cheese" before we go to the big game.

...later this same day (2/17/04) - I found a picture of Bob and the boys when Jarrett was very tiny.  I notice that Andrew had gotten his hair cut, so maybe Jarrett was 3 weeks old.  They always went to the North Pole Barber shop in North Aurora (cute name).

Bob holding Jarrett and Andrew (Jarrett's looking outside to see if he can see the birdie).

It is amazing what we can do technologically these days.  When you think about how we can share these photos with everyone and anyone all over the world, it completely boggles the mind.  Boggle, now that's a good game.  Haven't played that in a long time.  Scrabble is one of my favorite board games.  People who were born with the spelling "gene" probably enjoy it more than most.  Although, it just takes a few lucky letters to get those extra 50 points.  Okie dokie, I'm going to see if Hobbes wants to come back in.  I let him out to check his territory and I'm not sure if he thinks it's very warm yet.  bye, djb

Tuesday - February 17, 2004 - It's not as cold today but we still have snow outside since the temp is under 32 degrees.

Jarrett holding Hobbes with Andrew assisting and wearing no hat, as usual.

I found this picture in my "files" (that's a joke).  Hobbes always wanted to go outside, so when we had one of our first snows one year, the boys decided to take him out to see the snow.  They put a leash on him so he wouldn't run away.  Basically, it was a disaster so Jarrett picked him up.  I'm not sure exactly what Andrew was doing but whenever Hobbes managed to sneak out the door, Jarrett was usually the one who would catch him.  Hobbes didn't like the snow then and he still doesn't like the snow!  bye for now.  see ya later, djb

Monday - February 16, 2004 - I'm beginning a new week in my journal, so I have to do some interesting shuffling of the pages today.  I know I can do it.  lol  It's the fake President's Day today.  It has nothing to do with presidents, it has more to do with goofing off and shopping, which I completely support!!  You can tell if a holiday is a REAL holiday or not if you don't get your garbage picked up (and you're supposed to).  And there's the parking meter situation.  On a REAL holiday, you don't have to pay the meter.  We haven't had a day off for ages so I think it's a good idea.  I had to put baby pictures of Jarrett on his Jarrett's picture page because I felt guilty that I did it for Andrew and not for Jarrett.  Of course, I didn't have this website up and running on Jarrett's birthday.  Anyway, it's fun to look at their baby pictures.  In most of Jarrett's photos, Andrew is somewhere in the scene.  Either behind me or pulling on my leg or watching Sesame Street, whatever.  One of my favorite early photos is the one where Andrew is in Jarrett's crib (which not that long before had been Andrew's).  He's pulling on Jarrett's sleeve.  I can't remember WHY.  I guess he thought Jarrett was his very own living, breathing toy.

Jarrett posing in his crib while Andrew is stretching his sleeve.                           Andrew and Jarrett posing for a picture - Big Brother, Little Brother.

Now, I'm going to begin the process of getting this up and running, so you all can read what's going on.  Not that much, really.  So, I'll see ya later.  bye, djb
